Women Who Lead

Thriving in Action.

When Bishnu first moved to Brookline in 2015, she was navigating a new city as a single mom, struggling with English, and feeling isolated. Joining Women Thriving as a participant at a Quarterly Dinner Night was the first step in finding community and support. Through programs like Leadership Corps, the Summer Wellness Challenge, volunteer opportunities, and her work on the Board of Directors, Bishnu gradually gained confidence, improved her English, and discovered her voice–eventually speaking in front of crowds of 50+ and leading programs herself.

Bishnu also participated in WT’s job readiness and public speaking programs, including a Toastmasters course, which helped her grow professionally. These experiences opened doors to opportunities across organizations and professions, including her current role as a full-time Nepali Medical Interpreter. Reflecting on her journey, Bishnu shares, “Women Thriving helped me thrive by providing practical and holistic tools as well as a community of support I can lean on like family.”

After moving to Brookline from China, Cathy faced the challenge of translating her years of experience in the book industry into local opportunities. Through Women Thriving, she participated in programs like BIPOC Leadership, served as a Program Facilitator, and joined the volunteer Board of Directors. Women Thriving’s paid job training program helped Cathy strengthen her English, finance, and computer skills, revise her résumé, and prepare for interviews; ultimately connecting her with her first part-time local job.

Through these experiences, Cathy gained practical skills, built her professional network, and developed the confidence to take on leadership roles. Cathy reflects, “Women Thriving helped me thrive by developing the skills I needed to secure my first local job. I hope all women who are struggling can receive the same support, it can make a real difference in their lives, as it did in mine.”
